A nuclear startup called Valar Atomics staged an unusual demonstration: it switched on a small nuclear reactor live onstage and used it to power a desktop computer.
According to Tom's Hardware, Valar Atomics claims to be the first startup to produce nuclear power, and it backed that claim up in front of an audience by using its Ward 250 microreactor to run an Nvidia RTX Spark unit — a compact PC aimed at AI work.
The demo was paired with a bigger announcement. Tom's Hardware reports that Valar Atomics is partnering with Nvidia to build a 30-megawatt "closed loop" AI data center. The notable part of that design is water: the report says the facility would not draw water from its surroundings.
That detail speaks to one of the quieter tensions in the AI boom. Large data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity, and many rely on local water for cooling — a growing point of friction in communities where these facilities are built. A closed-loop system that avoids tapping local water supplies, paired with an on-site nuclear power source, is pitched as a way to run AI hardware without leaning on the surrounding grid or watershed.
