The electricity appetite of AI is no longer an abstraction buried in tech company disclosures. It is showing up in equipment failures, local politics, and campaign messaging.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the AI power surge is "frying its own data centers" while rattling the broader grid — a sign the strain runs in both directions, damaging the facilities themselves as well as the systems that feed them. Business Standard reports the core technical problem is volatility: AI data centers don't draw power at a steady hum but in sharp swings, and that swinging demand stresses electrical equipment and threatens grid stability.

That's a different issue from simply needing more electricity. Grids are built around predictable loads. When thousands of chips ramp up and drop off in unison, the resulting spikes can push transformers and other hardware beyond what they were designed to handle.

The politics are moving faster than the infrastructure. The Verge's Gaby Del Valle reported on Hernando County, Florida, where the county commission unanimously approved a yearlong moratorium on data centers — and The Verge frames the backlash as unusually bipartisan, with the left and right converging on opposition. Unanimous votes at the county level are worth noticing. They suggest data center siting has stopped being a routine economic development question and become something local officials feel pressure to block outright.
