President Donald Trump has thrown the weight of the federal government behind quantum computing, signing two executive orders aimed at accelerating the technology and shoring up the cybersecurity that protects sensitive data.

According to reporting aggregated from Yahoo Finance and Shoreline Media Group, the orders are designed to give the U.S. quantum industry a fresh boost. WION reports that one order targets the development of a "scientifically relevant" quantum computer by 2028, while a second focuses on strengthening quantum-resistant cryptography to keep data secure against future machines powerful enough to break today's encryption.

Alongside the orders, the administration plans to invest $2 billion in quantum computing companies, according to MSN. The news has energized investors, putting a cluster of quantum-linked stocks in focus, including IBM, IonQ, D-Wave, Rigetti and Quantum Computing Inc.

Quantum computers work fundamentally differently from the laptops and servers we use today, promising to solve certain problems far faster than conventional machines. But the field is still early. MSN notes that quantum computing remains "in its infancy" and requires massive, long-term investment, which makes betting on it highly speculative and rooted in future potential rather than present-day results.

Why it matters: A $2 billion federal commitment and a 2028 deadline signal that Washington views quantum as a strategic priority, with real stakes for both national competitiveness and the security of everyone's encrypted data.
