Against expectations, Tesla's Cybercab is now in production. The small, autonomous two-seater has officially entered the manufacturing pipeline, and Tesla is taking the regulatory steps needed to back that up.

According to The Verge, Tesla recently filed paperwork with the Environmental Protection Agency — a standard but meaningful step in certifying a new electric vehicle's legitimacy for the U.S. market. That filing also revealed a notable distinction: the Cybercab is the lightest and most efficient vehicle Tesla has ever made.

The Cybercab is designed as a compact, driverless two-seater — a sharp departure from Tesla's existing lineup of larger family-oriented vehicles. Its low weight likely contributes directly to its efficiency numbers, since carrying less mass requires less energy, which can translate into longer range on a single charge.

The Verge notes, however, that Elon Musk's company may not yet have a fully coherent commercial plan for the vehicle. Despite that uncertainty, the production start and EPA filing signal that Tesla is moving the Cybercab from concept to reality.
