Nvidia has unveiled a new liquid-cooling design that it says could dramatically reduce — or even eliminate — the water that AI data centers consume on-site.
The concern is real and growing. According to NDTV, the United Nations has warned that by the end of this decade, AI data centers could place heavy demands on resources, with critics noting that every AI prompt carries an environmental cost. As MSN reports, much of that worry centers not on chips or software but on water: the large volumes needed to cool increasingly power-hungry facilities, which critics say could strain local supplies.
Nvidia's answer is to cool its servers entirely with liquid, removing the air-cooling fans that traditionally rely on water. According to Business Today, the company says its Rubin AI servers can run on a fan-free, closed-loop system using coolant at 45°C (113°F). Tom's Hardware notes that this temperature is "hotter than a hot tub," and that running warmer reduces electricity costs while cutting water consumption to "basically zero" — a reduction Nvidia frames as up to 100%.
The claim has drawn high-profile attention. According to MSN, Nvidia says AI's water problem may already be solved, and Elon Musk has voiced agreement.
Still, the technology is not a complete fix. Tom's Hardware cautions that broader sustainability challenges remain, even if on-site water use falls sharply.
Why it matters: as AI scales up, the resources powering it are becoming a flashpoint for communities and regulators — so a credible way to slash data-center water use could ease one of the boom's most pointed criticisms.
