Nvidia says it has found a way to keep the world's most demanding AI machines cool while using far less water — by letting the cooling liquid run hotter than you might expect.

In a post titled "Hotter Than a Hot Tub," the Nvidia blog explains that a typical hot tub sits around 38 to 40 degrees Celsius, warm enough that most people can only soak for about 15 minutes. Nvidia's newest AI servers, by contrast, can run their cooling liquid up to 45 degrees Celsius — or 113 degrees Fahrenheit.

That higher temperature limit is the whole point. According to Nvidia, allowing the liquid to get hotter is precisely what makes the system more efficient. When the coolant can tolerate more heat, data centers don't have to work as hard — or use as much water — to chill it back down before sending it through the racks again.

The practical claim drew the most attention. According to Axios, Nvidia says AI's water challenge is "largely solved" thanks to the new cooling technology, a framing echoed by Crypto Briefing in its own coverage. The Tech Buzz described the 45°C approach as one that "redefines" how AI data centers handle energy.

Water use has become a flashpoint as AI expands. The massive data centers that train and run AI models generate enormous heat, and traditional cooling can consume large volumes of water — a growing concern in regions where the facilities are being built. Liquid cooling that runs hotter could ease that strain by recycling coolant more efficiently and leaning less on water-hungry chilling.

Why it matters: if Nvidia's hotter-running cooling delivers on its promise, it could blunt one of the most visible environmental objections to the AI boom — the industry's thirst for water.
