Mobileye Global, best known as the company that supplies self-driving technology to major automakers, is stepping out from behind the scenes. The Intel-owned firm announced Tuesday that it plans to launch its own robotaxi service in the United States in 2027, according to CNBC.
The service will run on Mobileye's Moovit platform, a transit and mobility app the company already operates, and is slated to debut in at least one U.S. city, Ars Technica reports. Rather than simply selling its sensors and software to others, Mobileye would operate rides directly under its own brand.
The move puts Mobileye in more direct competition with the likes of Waymo, which already runs commercial robotaxi fleets in several American cities, and other players racing to make autonomous ride-hailing commercially viable.
For riders and regulators, the entry of another well-capitalized, hardware-and-software-integrated company into the space could accelerate the timeline for self-driving taxis becoming a mainstream option—or add to the crowded field of firms still working to prove the technology is ready for everyday use.
