MicroVision has handed over a batch of its lidar sensors to a major artificial intelligence company for testing in robotics and other advanced applications, the company announced.

In a release carried by ACCESS Newswire and dated June 29, the Redmond, Washington-based firm said it delivered its MOVIA sensors to what it described as a "leading artificial intelligence company and hyperscaler" for evaluation across robotics, automation, and autonomous systems. MicroVision did not name the recipient. A hyperscaler is the industry term for the operators of the world's largest cloud and data-center networks.

Lidar — short for light detection and ranging — uses pulses of laser light to build a precise, real-time three-dimensional map of a machine's surroundings. It is the same class of sensing technology widely associated with self-driving cars, and it gives robots a way to perceive depth and distance that cameras alone cannot.

According to MicroVision's statement, the delivery "highlights growing demand for real-world perception technologies as artificial intelligence expands into robotics, automation, and autonomous systems."

The news was picked up by financial-news outlets including Stock Titan and GuruFocus, reflecting investor interest in MicroVision, which trades under the ticker MVIS. The materials describe the shipment as an evaluation, meaning the AI company is assessing the sensors rather than committing to a production order.
