Japan has switched on Shunkai, described as its first full-stack quantum computer built on neutral-atom technology.
According to a report carried by MSN under the headline "Japan enters neutral-atom race with Shunkai, its first full-stack quantum computer," the machine went operational on August 24 at the Institute for Molecular Science. The same report says Shunkai was built by IMS together with Hitachi and Infleqtion, and identifies Infleqtion as the only foreign partner in Japan's Moonshot program.
Tech Times covered the launch under a similar framing, casting the debut as Japan entering the neutral-atom race.
A few terms are worth unpacking. "Neutral-atom" refers to one of several competing approaches to building a quantum computer — an alternative to the superconducting chips that have dominated headlines from large US technology companies. "Full-stack" means the system is not just experimental hardware in a lab: the layers that sit on top of it, the control and software needed to actually run it, are part of the package too.
The involvement of Hitachi points to industrial participation rather than a purely academic effort, and the description of Infleqtion as the sole foreign partner in Moonshot suggests a mostly domestic program that made a deliberate exception for outside expertise.
