Intel has floated an idea that sounds like science fiction but is really a plumbing problem: what if the computers that run satellite constellations lived in space instead of on the ground?
According to Tom's Hardware, Intel has proposed an "orbital data center" architecture built as a two-tier network. In the upper tier sit a smaller number of powerful satellites in higher orbit, acting as the brains of the system. Below them, in low Earth orbit (LEO), fly thousands of much simpler satellites that take direction from above.
The payoff, as Tom's Hardware describes it, is reduced reliance on terrestrial control centers — the ground stations and data facilities that today do the heavy thinking for satellite fleets and beam instructions upward.
The logic behind the split is worth spelling out. LEO satellites move fast and low, so any single ground station can only see a given satellite for a short window before it passes out of view. Concentrating command and computation in higher-orbit satellites, which cover far more of the planet at once, means the constellation can be managed from above rather than in fragments from below. It also lets the LEO satellites themselves stay cheap and simple, which matters when you are launching thousands of them.
Tom's Hardware presents this as a proposed architecture from Intel, not a deployed product, and the reporting does not describe hardware, partners, or timelines.
Why it matters: satellite constellations are becoming core internet infrastructure, and moving their control systems off the ground would change who builds them, what they cost, and how much of the world's computing quietly happens in orbit.
