Google is bringing its Gemini AI assistant to Waze, the popular community-driven navigation app. According to The Verge, the integration is meant to let drivers personalize their trips a little more.
The rollout includes four new updates in total, but Google is only describing two of them as actually involving Gemini, The Verge reports. Among the additions are a Motorcycle mode and a "Less Chatty" mode, according to Engadget.
The changes fit a broader pattern at Google. As Engadget puts it, Waze — like Google Maps — is "going all-in on Gemini," folding the company's flagship AI into another one of its everyday products. The Verge notes that part of the update involves Waze refreshing its conversation repertoire, the bank of phrases and responses the app uses when talking to drivers.
Waze has long stood apart from Google Maps by leaning on real-time reports from its own users about traffic, crashes, police, and road hazards. Layering Gemini on top signals that Google wants that crowdsourced experience to feel more tailored — whether that means routing suited to a motorcycle rider or simply an app that talks less when you'd rather it stayed quiet.
Both Engadget and The Verge frame the move as an AI "makeover" for the app, though the sources make clear that not every new feature is powered by Gemini.
