A car reviewer testing a vehicle was blocked in by police and detained for roughly an hour after a network of Flock AI cameras flagged his car as carrying "stolen" tags, according to Tom's Hardware.

The problem, Tom's Hardware reports, came down to how the cameras read the plate. The vehicle wore a non-standard New Jersey plate, and Flock's cameras failed to pick up the smaller digits printed on it. That partial reading was enough to match the car against a stolen-vehicle alert.

According to Tom's Hardware, the root issue traced back further than the cameras themselves. The initial police report on the stolen plate had omitted the smaller numbers. Because that record was incomplete, the automated system ended up flagging several legitimate plates that happened to share the visible digits — not just the one actually reported stolen.

The result was an ambush-style stop. Tom's Hardware says officers moved in on the tester in a store parking lot, boxed his vehicle in, and held him on suspicion of driving a car with stolen tags before the situation was sorted out.

Flock cameras are automated license-plate readers deployed widely by police departments and private communities to scan passing traffic and check plates against hotlists. The technology promises fast alerts on stolen cars and wanted vehicles, but it hands a lot of trust to whatever data and image-recognition sit behind the alert.

Why it matters: when an automated system reads a plate wrong — or is fed an incomplete record — the machine's mistake can put an innocent person in the middle of a high-stakes police stop, showing how errors in surveillance tech carry real-world consequences for ordinary drivers.
