Federal energy regulators have moved to speed up how quickly power-hungry AI data centers can plug into the U.S. electricity grid.

According to U.S. News & World Report and KCRA, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) backed a plan aligned with President Trump's push to accelerate power delivery to these facilities. FERC directed grid operators to create what TechCrunch describes as a "fast lane" for data center interconnections — the often slow process of connecting a new large electricity customer to the grid.

FERC itself framed the move as a consequential grid infrastructure decision. Nvidia, writing on its company blog, called it a major milestone on "large-load interconnection" that affects how builders of AI data centers, semiconductor fabrication support systems and advanced manufacturing facilities connect to the grid. Nvidia argued the actions help address grid stress and improve affordability.

The decision does not solve every problem, however. TechCrunch notes that while FERC sped up the connection process, it failed to address underlying electricity supply shortages — meaning the ruling makes it easier to plug in, but does not by itself create more power to go around.

The backdrop is the surging electricity appetite of artificial intelligence. Training and running large AI models requires enormous amounts of computing power, and the data centers that house it are straining grids and raising questions about who pays for new capacity.

Why it matters: As AI's energy demands collide with an aging power grid, this ruling shapes how fast new data centers get built — and leaves open the harder question of where all that electricity will actually come from.
