Conversations with Anthropic's AI assistant Claude have been turning up in Google Search results, and the company has now publicly addressed the situation, according to TweakTown.

The story took off on social media before it reached the press. As MSN's summary of the India Today report puts it, "social media is buzzing with claims that Claude conversations containing sensitive information are appearing in Google Search," with "some are even calling it a major data leak."

India Today's own framing is more cautious. Its piece is headlined "Is Anthropic leaking your chats? Why some Claude conversations are appearing in Google Search" — posing the leak question rather than answering it, and asking whether Anthropic is "really" responsible in the way the viral posts suggest.

That gap between the alarm and the confirmed facts is the important part right now. The reporting available here establishes three things: Claude conversations have been found in Google's index, people online have described this as a leak, and Anthropic has issued a response. It does not establish how many conversations were involved, what those conversations contained, what technical mechanism put them in front of Google's crawler, or what exactly Anthropic said in reply.

For anyone who has typed something personal into a chatbot — a medical worry, a work document, a draft of a difficult email — the distinction matters enormously. A search engine indexing a page someone deliberately published is a very different event from a company exposing private chats.

It matters because hundreds of millions of people now treat AI assistants as private notebooks, and this is a live test of whether that assumption holds.
