BlackBerry, the company once synonymous with keyboard-clacking smartphones, has quietly moved on to a very different ambition: owning the software layer that runs AI-powered robots.

According to Stocktwits, whose report was also syndicated via MSN, BlackBerry is "done with smartphones and cars" and now wants to own the software inside AI robots. The vehicle for that ambition is QNX, BlackBerry's operating system for safety-critical systems — the kind of software where a crash is not an inconvenience but a hazard.

The notable wrinkle is the pace. Per the MSN summary of the reporting, BlackBerry is taking a deliberately cautious approach to putting AI into QNX, precisely because the software is safety-critical, while betting on long-term growth from industrial automation and so-called physical AI applications.

That tension is the whole story. The AI industry's dominant instinct is to ship fast and patch later. Safety-critical software runs on the opposite instinct: certify, verify, and only then deploy. BlackBerry appears to be wagering that when AI moves out of chatbots and into machines with motors and mass, the second instinct wins — and that customers building factory robots and automated industrial equipment will pay for software that has been proven not to fail.

It is also a familiar move for the company. BlackBerry's pivot from consumer hardware to embedded software has been underway for years; the reporting frames robotics and physical AI as the next destination for that same asset, rather than a fresh start.

Why it matters: as AI starts controlling physical machines that share space with people, the unglamorous question of whose operating system is underneath — and how carefully it was built — stops being a technical footnote and becomes a safety one.
