Quantum computing startup Atom Computing has announced a strategic collaboration with Phasecraft to speed up the discovery of next-generation materials, according to a PR Newswire release carried by outlets including The Quantum Insider, HPCwire and New Electronics.
The two companies plan to work together on materials-science algorithms, the Quantum Computing Report says, with the goal of advancing what the industry calls "utility-scale" quantum applications — a phrase used by HPCwire to describe quantum machines powerful enough to tackle real-world problems rather than just lab demonstrations. The partners frame the effort around developing new materials, though the announcements do not specify which materials or applications.
Atom Computing, based in Boulder, Colorado, builds quantum computers using neutral atoms as their basic information units. Phasecraft contributes expertise in quantum algorithms aimed at chemistry and materials problems.
Separately, Atom Computing has also moved to expand its reach through hardware partnerships. According to Business Weekly and TMCnet, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Nu Quantum, a Cambridge-headquartered firm specializing in quantum networking. That deal aims to combine Atom Computing's neutral-atom systems with Nu Quantum's networking stack to help unlock utility-scale quantum computing — a distinct collaboration from the Phasecraft software effort.
Why it matters: today's quantum computers remain too small and error-prone for most practical work, so deals that pair specialized hardware with purpose-built algorithms are how the field hopes to reach the scale where quantum machines can design better batteries, catalysts and other materials that classical computers struggle to simulate.
