Water is less discussed but flows from the same source: many data centers use water to cool the servers running these models. Resource extraction points further upstream, to the metals and minerals inside the chips. And electronic waste sits at the far end of the chain, when that hardware is retired.

The Outlook India piece frames these as the hidden costs of the digital revolution — hidden in the sense that they are real but rarely appear on the balance sheet a user sees when typing a prompt.

Investors appear to be noticing the same chain. Bloomberg recently ran a piece headlined "The Best AI Hedge?
