Terafab
Terafab is an advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility being developed by SpaceX and Tesla with an initial $16.8 billion combined investment. Located in Grimes County, Texas, the facility is designed to produce AI chips at scale for the companies' operations. At approximately 100 million square feet, it represents one of the largest construction projects in U.S. semiconductor history.
The facility addresses growing demand for specialized AI chips and reflects efforts to reduce reliance on external semiconductor suppliers. Tesla and SpaceX have recruited experienced manufacturing executives, including veterans from major chipmakers, to oversee production. The plant will operate using natural gas infrastructure.
Terafab exemplifies a broader industry trend toward vertical integration in chip production, particularly for AI applications. The scale and capital investment reflect the strategic importance of semiconductor self-sufficiency for companies with substantial computational needs.
