Xiaomi has moved its Xring O3 processor into mass production, with contract manufacturer TSMC building the chip on a 3nm process, according to CRN Asia.
The short version for non-engineers: Xiaomi doesn't just want to assemble phones anymore. It wants to design the brain inside them. A "3nm process" refers to one of the most advanced chipmaking techniques available — the kind of manufacturing normally reserved for flagship silicon. Xiaomi designs the chip; TSMC, the Taiwanese foundry that fabricates chips for much of the industry, actually produces it.
That's a meaningful step for a company that has historically leaned on outside chip suppliers for its handsets. Designing in-house silicon gives a phone maker more control over performance, power efficiency, and how tightly hardware and software fit together — and less dependence on whatever a supplier decides to ship.
There's a catch, and it's the more interesting part of the story. Pandaily reports that while Xiaomi has debuted AI-capable chips, the company has yet to define what an "AI phone" actually is. In other words, the hardware is arriving before the argument for it. Xiaomi can now put AI-capable silicon in your pocket, but the pitch for what that silicon does that you'd notice day to day remains unsettled.
That gap is not unique to Xiaomi. Across the industry, "AI phone" has functioned more as a marketing category than a product definition, with chip specifications standing in for a clear consumer benefit.
Why it matters: a Chinese phone giant reaching leading-edge 3nm silicon through TSMC signals real ambition in a business dominated by a handful of chip designers — but until someone explains what an AI phone is for, the most advanced processor in the world is still a solution shopping for a problem.
