The UK's Royal Navy has stripped internet connectivity out of the cameras on its drones after discovering the devices were quietly sending signals to an IP address in China, according to a report by Richard Holmes in The Telegraph, surfaced on Techmeme.
The signals were described as "heartbeat communications" — the routine pings a networked device sends to check in with a server. On their own, heartbeats are unremarkable: plenty of consumer hardware phones home for updates or status checks. What made this different was the destination and the setting. These were military drones, and the check-ins were going to an address in China.
The Telegraph's report, which is based on unnamed sources, also says that special forces boats earmarked for planned missions in the Gulf had been fitted with Chinese-made components.
The Navy's response was blunt rather than clever: rather than trying to filter or monitor the traffic, it removed the cameras' ability to reach the internet at all. That is the standard playbook when you cannot fully account for what a device is doing — take away the channel instead of trying to police it.
