SK Hynix, a key supplier to Nvidia, has begun shipping samples of its latest high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips to major customers, the South Korean chipmaker said this week.

According to Reuters, the company is moving the new samples out the door as it seeks to strengthen its position in the fast-growing market for memory used in artificial intelligence systems. One report, carried by MSN, identified the advanced chips as HBM4E memory built for AI workloads.

High-bandwidth memory is a specialized type of chip that sits alongside the powerful processors that train and run AI models. It moves large amounts of data quickly, which is why it has become a critical ingredient in the AI hardware that companies like Nvidia design. Shipping "samples" is an early step: it lets big customers test the chips in their own systems before committing to large orders and mass production.

The move underscores how central memory makers have become to the AI buildout. SK Hynix's standing as an Nvidia supplier means its progress on next-generation chips is closely watched as a signal of where cutting-edge AI hardware is heading.

In a separate sign of how hard chipmakers are competing, Digitimes reported that SK Hynix has scrapped degree requirements in an effort to court AI chip talent.
