Some Russian military drones are turning to one of the oldest navigation tools in existence: the humble magnetic compass.

According to Tom's Hardware, Russian drone troops have been spotted bolting cheap, screwed-on magnetic compasses onto their aircraft as a navigation aid. The crude add-on helps operators find their bearings and locate targets even when satellite signals are unavailable.

The workaround is clever in its simplicity. Tom's Hardware reports that a drone's onboard camera can occasionally tilt downward to glance at the compass and read its heading. In effect, the same camera used to spot targets doubles as a set of eyes for checking direction — no specialized electronics required.

Why would a modern military reach for a tool that predates electricity? The answer is jamming. GPS and other satellite navigation signals can be disrupted or spoofed on the battlefield, leaving a drone effectively blind to its own position. A magnetic compass needs no satellites, no radio link, and no power beyond what it takes to point north. That makes it immune to the electronic warfare that can cripple more sophisticated systems.

The trade-off is precision. A compass glimpsed through a camera lens offers only a rough sense of heading, not the pinpoint coordinates that satellite navigation provides. But for a drone that has lost its satellite connection, a rough bearing is far better than none at all.

Why it matters: the improvised fix is a small but telling sign of how heavily both sides in modern conflict now rely on jamming, and how far militaries will go — even backward, to centuries-old technology — to keep their drones flying when high-tech navigation fails.
