In plain terms, the Pentagon is bracing for a moment when quantum computers become powerful enough to upend the assumptions that today's military communications and data security rely on.

The concern centers on cryptography — the math that scrambles sensitive information so only the intended recipient can read it. Much of the encryption protecting government and military systems today depends on problems that ordinary computers cannot solve quickly. A sufficiently advanced quantum computer could, in theory, crack those protections far faster, exposing communications and data that are assumed to be secure.

The phrase "unpredictable quantum future state" captures the core challenge: no one knows exactly when such machines will arrive, or how capable they will be. That uncertainty is precisely what the Pentagon frames as the danger.
