OpenAI has named Indian-origin technology executive Uday Ruddaraju as its Chief Technology Officer, Compute, according to reports from Firstpost, PTI, and MSN.
The move places Ruddaraju in charge of the compute infrastructure that underpins OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed maker of ChatGPT. As Firstpost describes it, the role centers on expanding the company's computing capacity — the servers, chips, and data-center muscle that AI systems need to run and to train new models.
Ruddaraju is not a new arrival. According to PTI, reported via MSN, he joined OpenAI in July of last year after parting ways with Elon Musk's xAI, meaning the new title amounts to a promotion roughly a year into his tenure. MSN's separate report frames it the same way, noting OpenAI "promoted" him from within after he came over from xAI. His earlier work at xAI, per MSN, focused on AI systems.
Why the story matters: compute has become one of the fiercest bottlenecks in the AI race. The companies building the most powerful models are competing for scarce chips, power, and data-center space, and the executives who control that infrastructure increasingly shape what a company can actually build.
