Nvidia has placed a $2 billion bet on Nebius Group, a smaller AI cloud infrastructure company that rents out computing power for artificial intelligence work.

The move became public when Nvidia disclosed a 9.3% beneficial ownership stake in Nebius (NASDAQ: NBIS). According to Insider Monkey, Nebius shares rallied more than 18% on July 21 following the disclosure — a sharp reaction that shows how much weight investors place on Nvidia's endorsement.

Nvidia is the dominant maker of the chips that power AI, so when it backs a cloud provider, it signals confidence that the company will be a meaningful buyer and deployer of that hardware. It also deepens Nvidia's reach across the AI supply chain, from the chips themselves to the data centers that run them.

The Nvidia investment is not the only tailwind. According to simplywall.st, Nebius has also landed an AI deal with Meta, pairing the chipmaker's financial backing with a marquee customer relationship.

Still, analysts are urging caution. Insider Monkey frames Nebius as a "speculative growth play" — a stock with real upside potential but meaningful risk, the kind of name whose share price can swing hard on news rather than steady earnings.

Why it matters: Nvidia's cash and credibility can turn a little-known cloud provider into a serious player almost overnight, showing how the world's most valuable chipmaker is using its balance sheet to shape who wins in AI infrastructure.
