The memory that feeds data-center servers is about to get noticeably faster.
According to ServeTheHome, next-generation server memory was on display at Computex 2026, with two of the industry's biggest suppliers showing off parts that push well beyond today's typical speeds.
Micron was demonstrating DDR5-8000 RDIMMs, a faster take on the registered memory modules that already sit inside most servers. Samsung, meanwhile, showed second-generation MRDIMMs running at 12,800 MT/s — the DDR5-12800 speed grade referenced in the headline.
A quick translation: RDIMMs are the standard workhorse memory sticks used in servers. MRDIMMs (multiplexed rank DIMMs) are a newer design that effectively combines memory ranks to move more data per second, which is why Samsung's second-gen part reaches a higher number than Micron's RDIMMs. "MT/s" means megatransfers per second — a measure of how much data the memory shuttles back and forth, so a bigger number generally means more bandwidth.
ServeTheHome frames these as the next generation of server memory, meaning they are being previewed now rather than sitting in most machines yet.
Why it matters: memory bandwidth is one of the biggest bottlenecks for demanding server workloads — especially AI training and inference, where processors constantly wait on data.
