Nearfield Instruments, a Netherlands-based maker of equipment used to measure the tiny features on advanced semiconductors, has raised $380 million in new funding, according to Stephen Nellis of Reuters. The round was led by Fidelity and valued the company at $1.6 billion.

The company builds atomic force microscopes — extremely precise instruments that inspect and measure the structures etched onto modern chips. As chipmakers pack ever-smaller features onto silicon, the ability to measure those features accurately becomes a bottleneck. According to Finimize, the new capital is aimed at speeding up chip metrology, the industry term for this measurement and inspection work.

Metrology sits quietly behind the more famous parts of chipmaking. While companies that print circuits onto wafers get most of the attention, manufacturers cannot reliably produce cutting-edge chips without tools that confirm each layer has been built correctly. Errors invisible to the naked eye can ruin an entire batch, so faster and more accurate measurement directly affects how many usable chips a factory can turn out.

Nearfield's home base also matters. The Netherlands is already a strategic hub for semiconductor equipment, and a well-funded local player measuring chip features adds to that concentration of expertise.

The backing from Fidelity, a large and established investor, signals confidence that demand for advanced chips — and the precision tools needed to make them — will keep growing.

Why it matters: as the world's appetite for powerful chips expands, the unglamorous business of measuring them is becoming valuable enough to attract hundreds of millions in investment.
