Moonshot AI has released Kimi K3 as an open-source model, and the reaction in China's tech press suggests the moment is being read as a turning point rather than a one-off.

According to Chinese business outlet 36 Kr, the release means that open-sourcing top-tier models "has become a realistic possibility" — in other words, the assumption that the very best AI systems stay locked behind paid APIs is no longer safe. Until recently, the strongest models were treated as trade secrets: you could rent access, but you could not download the weights, inspect them, or run them on your own hardware.

A second thread runs through the story. A report from varindia.com says Moonshot AI powered Kimi K3's development using Nvidia chips supplied through Alibaba — a detail that matters because access to high-end AI accelerators has been the central chokepoint in the US–China technology contest.
