Atomic Semi, the semiconductor tooling startup co-founded by veteran chip architect Jim Keller and DIY chip-fabrication pioneer Sam Zeloof, has rebranded itself as "Fab2."
According to Tom's Hardware, the new name underlines the company's intended role as a "fab fab" — in other words, a factory whose product is other factories. Rather than churning out chips directly, Fab2 aims to mass-produce small semiconductor fabrication plants, the specialized facilities where microchips are actually made.
Tom's Hardware also reports that the company is shifting its operations to Texas as part of the change.
Why the wordplay matters: today, building a chip fab is one of the most expensive and complex undertakings in all of manufacturing, with leading-edge plants costing many billions of dollars and taking years to construct. That extreme cost concentrates chipmaking in the hands of a small number of giant companies. A startup promising to mass-produce compact, presumably cheaper fabrication tools is pitching a very different model — one where making a chip factory could look less like a moonshot and more like buying standardized equipment.
Keller's involvement lends the effort weight. He is known across the industry for his work on high-profile processor designs, and his backing tends to draw attention to whatever he builds. Zeloof, meanwhile, earned a following for fabricating working chips in a home lab, an unusual proof that the craft can be radically simplified.
