India has set a target to design and unveil its first homegrown artificial intelligence chip within the next several years, part of a broader push to build up its domestic semiconductor industry.

According to Livemint (Mint), Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday that India's first indigenous AI inference chip will be made and presented as early as 2029 or 2030. He made the remarks after the Cabinet approved a ₹1.27 trillion measure, Mint reported.

The effort is being anchored by C-DAC, India's Centre for Development of Advanced Computing. Mint describes the project as the country's bid to create a chip comparable to those made by Nvidia, the US company that dominates the market for AI hardware.

According to NewsBytes, C-DAC is spearheading the work on the inference chip, with the stated goals of achieving global competitiveness and reducing India's reliance on foreign semiconductor technology.

An "inference" chip is the kind of processor that runs already-trained AI models to generate answers, rather than the more demanding task of training those models in the first place. Focusing there is a common entry point for newcomers to the field.

The timeline is notable but distant: a chip presented in 2029 or 2030 is still years away, and the sources describe an ambition and a funding commitment rather than a finished product.
