IBM is putting a date on one of computing's most anticipated milestones. According to a Forbes analysis by contributor Paul Smith-Goodson, an analyst covering quantum computing and AI, the company is targeting "quantum advantage" by 2026, backed by a new generation of processors and software tools.

Quantum advantage is the point at which a quantum computer solves a useful problem better, faster, or more cheaply than any conventional computer can. Until now it has mostly been a promise in research papers rather than something a business could buy time on. Attaching a year to it is a notable commitment.

The Forbes piece points to a hardware detail that signals how IBM is thinking about scale: the company's 300mm quantum processor wafer carries multiple chips. That wafer size is the standard format of the mainstream semiconductor industry, which suggests IBM is trying to move quantum chipmaking out of the laboratory and onto the kind of manufacturing lines that already produce chips in volume.

The push is happening alongside broader pressure on the company. The National CIO Review reports that IBM is expanding its AI, quantum, and security businesses despite execution challenges in the second quarter, a reminder that these long-horizon bets are being funded by a business with nearer-term problems to manage.

A caveat worth keeping in mind: the available reporting describes IBM's own target and an analyst's read on it, not an independently verified result. Roadmap dates in this field have a history of moving.

It matters because if IBM hits the date, quantum computing stops being a science project and starts being a tool that companies have to decide whether to buy.
