For the first time, ChatGPT controls less than half of the AI chatbot market — a milestone that shows how quickly the competitive landscape is shifting beneath OpenAI's feet.

According to TechCrunch, ChatGPT remains the most popular AI assistant in the world with more than 1.1 billion monthly users. But its rivals are gaining fast. Google's Gemini has reached 662 million monthly users, and Anthropic's Claude now claims 245 million — numbers that would have seemed implausible just two years ago.

The raw user counts, however, may undersell how much the ground is moving. According to a report cited by LiveMint, Anthropic's Claude earns $2.76 in revenue per user compared to ChatGPT's $1.74. Claude also converts a higher share of users into paying subscribers, suggesting Anthropic has found a more efficient path to monetization even with a smaller audience.

GuruFocus separately reports that Anthropic is outpacing OpenAI in overall AI adoption growth — meaning the gap in user numbers may keep shrinking.

OpenAI's position is still formidable. Surpassing a billion monthly users is a staggering achievement for any product. But market leadership measured in users and market leadership measured in revenue growth and conversion rates are telling two different stories right now.

Why it matters: when a dominant platform's share slips below 50% for the first time, history suggests the market rarely snaps back — it tends to keep fragmenting, and today's challengers become tomorrow's serious competitors.
