A Parkinson's disease stem cell therapy abandoned by one of the world's biggest drugmakers has found a new home.
According to Endpoints News, Cellular Intelligence has picked up the Parkinson's cell therapy program that Novo Nordisk shed when the Danish pharmaceutical company closed its cell therapy unit. The report is datelined Montreal.
Before committing to the deal, Cellular Intelligence did its homework. Endpoints News reports that the company contracted neurologist and drug developer Nuno Mendonça to conduct due diligence on Novo's Parkinson's cell therapy program — essentially, to examine the science and data behind the shelved asset and judge whether it was worth reviving.
Cell therapies for Parkinson's aim to replace the dopamine-producing brain cells that the disease progressively destroys, using stem cell–derived material. It is an experimental and closely watched corner of neuroscience, and programs like this represent years of research investment.
The move fits a familiar pattern in the pharmaceutical industry: when a large company reorganizes and exits a research area, its half-finished programs don't necessarily die. Smaller or more specialized players can acquire them, betting that assets a giant deemed non-core still hold scientific and commercial promise.
