Apple's next round of Mac desktop silicon is shaping up to be less about spreadsheets and more about running artificial intelligence on your own machine.

According to PCMag, which published an explainer on Apple's M5 Ultra and M6 chips, the new processors arrive in September in the Mac mini and Mac Studio desktops. PCMag describes them as combining "bleeding-edge" manufacturing — a 2-nanometer process — with what it calls unprecedented four-die scaling, and says the result should boost local agentic AI "in a big, big way."

Two pieces of jargon are doing the heavy lifting there. The "2nm" figure refers to the chipmaking process node; smaller numbers generally signal a newer, denser manufacturing generation, which is how the industry has kept squeezing more transistors into the same space. "Quad-die" means stitching four chips together to act as one, an extension of the approach Apple has used for its Ultra-tier parts, where high-end chips are built by fusing smaller ones rather than manufacturing one enormous piece of silicon.

The phrase worth watching is "local agentic AI." Most AI assistants today send your request to a company's data center and send an answer back. Running those models locally — on the desktop under your table — requires serious memory bandwidth and processing muscle, which is exactly what a four-die, 2nm design is built to supply.

Both source items in circulation trace back to the same PCMag report; Apple's own specifications and pricing are not detailed in them, and no Apple statements appear in either.

It matters because the fight over AI is quietly shifting from the cloud to the hardware people already own — and Apple is betting its desktops can be where that work happens.
