Anthropic has disabled two of its most advanced AI models — Fable 5 and Mythos 5 — following a U.S. export-control order, according to Forbes. The move marks a significant disruption for a company that has positioned itself at the frontier of AI development.

According to Silicon UK, Anthropic subsequently met with government officials in the wake of the Fable 5 suspension, signaling the company was seeking a resolution. Those efforts have so far come up short: The Standard (HK) reports there has been no breakthrough in Anthropic's talks with the Trump administration.

Export-control orders are government directives that restrict how certain technologies — including, increasingly, powerful AI models — can be shared, sold, or deployed, particularly with foreign entities or in sensitive contexts. When such an order targets an AI model, the company may be required to pull it from service to remain compliant, even if only temporarily.

The situation puts Anthropic in a difficult position. The company has cultivated a reputation for safety-focused AI development, but a forced suspension of flagship products underscores how quickly regulatory action can override business and research timelines. It also reflects a broader tension between the U.S. government's desire to maintain AI dominance and its parallel efforts to restrict the spread of powerful models.

With talks stalled and two major models offline, the standoff matters because it shows that even well-regarded AI labs are not insulated from geopolitical and regulatory forces — and that the rules governing powerful AI are still being written in real time.
