Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude chatbot, is reportedly in talks with South Korea's Samsung to manufacture its first custom-designed AI chip.

According to Technology Org, the discussions center on producing a chip built specifically to Anthropic's own specifications — a notable shift for a company that, like most AI developers, has relied on off-the-shelf processors. UPI similarly reports that Anthropic is "eyeing" Samsung for the work.

Designing a custom chip is a significant strategic move. Training and running large AI models is enormously expensive, and the specialized processors that power that work are in short supply and dominated by a handful of suppliers. By commissioning its own chip, an AI company can tailor the hardware to its software, potentially cutting costs and reducing dependence on the crowded market for general-purpose AI accelerators.

Samsung, one of the world's largest contract chipmakers, would be the manufacturing partner turning that design into physical silicon. The talks, as described by both sources, appear to be at an early stage, and neither report indicates a finalized deal.
