Anthropic has cut the system prompt for its Claude Code tool by 80 percent, according to The Decoder.

A system prompt is the standing set of background instructions a company feeds an AI model before a user ever types anything. It typically spells out rules, formatting expectations, and worked examples meant to keep the model on task.

The reason for the trim, according to The Decoder, is the company's new Fable 5 models. Anthropic staffer Tariq Shihipar said the models simply need fewer instructions and examples than earlier versions did.

More striking is the claim about why extra guidance can backfire. Shihipar said that detailed guidelines can actually hold the models back, because Fable 5 is "more imaginative" than the instructions it is handed. In other words, a long list of rules risks boxing in a model that would otherwise find a better path on its own.

The Decoder reports that Anthropic is moving away from strict rules as a result, leaning on the model's own judgment rather than an exhaustive script.

Why it matters: how companies write system prompts is usually invisible to the people using AI tools, but it shapes everything the software does. If newer models genuinely perform better with less hand-holding, it signals a shift in how AI products are built — and a sign that capability is advancing faster than the rulebooks written to constrain it.
