AMD has quietly stripped a memory encryption feature called TSME — Transparent Secure Memory Encryption — from its consumer-grade processors, and users are not happy about the discovery.

According to Ars Technica, the removal appears to have been a deliberate, covert move rather than an accidental omission or a clearly communicated product change. That lack of transparency is at the heart of the backlash: customers who relied on or expected the feature had no warning it was gone.

TSME is a hardware-level capability that encrypts the contents of a computer's RAM on the fly. The practical benefit is that even if an attacker gains physical access to a machine — or uses certain software exploits to peer into system memory — the data they retrieve is scrambled and unreadable without the encryption key. It's a meaningful layer of defense, particularly for users handling sensitive information.

The feature had been associated with AMD's enterprise and data-center chips, where security certifications and compliance requirements make such protections table stakes. Its presence on consumer silicon was a quiet bonus — until it wasn't.

What makes the situation sting for affected users is the apparent secrecy. There was no public changelog, no advisory, no opt-out. Buyers had no way to know a security capability they may have counted on had been silently removed from the chips they purchased.
