Alibaba has open-sourced its chip software as Chinese GPU makers push to weaken the dominance of Nvidia's CUDA platform, according to Ann Cao of the South China Morning Post.

The move follows similar plays by Huawei and Moore Threads, other Chinese chip players making their software more openly available. Together, the efforts point to a coordinated attempt across China's semiconductor industry to build an alternative to the tooling that has helped keep Nvidia at the center of AI computing.

The work is being led by T-Head, Alibaba's chip unit. According to the South China Morning Post, T-Head aims to lower migration barriers to its Zhenwu AI computing architectures — in other words, to make it easier for developers to move their software over to Alibaba's hardware rather than staying locked into Nvidia's ecosystem.

Why does software matter in a story about chips? Nvidia's advantage is not only its silicon but CUDA, the programming layer that developers use to write applications for its GPUs. Years of code, tools, and expertise have been built around CUDA, and that accumulated ecosystem is one of the biggest reasons customers find it hard to switch to rival chips. By open-sourcing their software and reducing the effort required to migrate, Chinese firms are attacking that lock-in directly.
