A drone strike that killed three people in Ukraine is being described as a grim first: an attack in which the machine, not a human operator, chose who to kill.
According to The New York Times, in a report published under the headline "A Drone Killed Three Ukrainians. It Was Guided Entirely by A.I.," the aircraft was steered to its target by artificial intelligence rather than by a pilot watching a video feed.
The drone industry outlet DroneXL reports that the aircraft was a Russian Molniya carrying an unencrypted Nvidia Jetson Orin module — a small, commercially available computer designed to run AI models on board a device rather than in a data center. DroneXL says the drone selected its own target and killed three civilians at a gas station in Zaporizhzhia on July 6.
The Seattle Times, carrying the same account, framed the strike as "a development long watched for in the war in Ukraine, presaging a dystopian future in which killer robots roam the skies making life-or-death decisions that reduce targets to data points."
The reaction has been blunt. The New York Post quoted a warning that "in a few years, we will be living in a 'Terminator' movie. It's no joke. Machines are making decisions to strike."
The technical detail matters as much as the body count. Small AI accelerators like the Jetson line are sold openly for robotics, factories and research, which makes autonomous targeting cheap to assemble and hard to control through export rules alone. That an operator apparently left the module unencrypted also suggests these systems are being fielded fast and roughly, not as polished military hardware.
It matters because the long-argued question of whether a machine should be allowed to decide to kill a human appears, in these accounts, to have already been answered on a battlefield.
