The exhaust from American AI is feeding China's defense sector
The day's biggest thread is also its most uncomfortable one: American AI companies may be tutoring China's military researchers without meaning to. A report summarized by Business Today points to more than 80 Chinese academic papers and patents in which researchers linked to the Chinese defense establishment appear to be working from the output of American chatbots. A separate report from Roya News, surfaced via Google News, makes the same claim in broader terms — that China is extracting outputs from US AI systems and using them to help train its own defense technology.
The mechanism matters here. This isn't chip smuggling or stolen weights; it's the ordinary product of a model, generated at scale and repurposed as training material. That makes it exceptionally hard to police, and it reframes every export-control debate happening in Washington: you can restrict the hardware and still export the reasoning.
Both capitals are reaching for the same lever
China, meanwhile, is moving to rein in open-source AI — and per a report surfaced by Bing News on MSN, the motivation has less to do with technology than with control over information. That lands at an awkward moment: Washington is separately debating whether to block Chinese models outright. Two governments, opposite directions of travel, converging on the same instinct that openly available models are a strategic liability.
The hardware side is already there. The Trump administration has imposed restrictions on Chinese robots, and according to Tekedia, the US tech industry is not speaking with one voice about it. That split is the story to watch: robotics supply chains run deep into China, and the companies that would bear the cost of decoupling are not uniformly convinced it's worth it.

That last detail is the one worth sitting with: the intrusions were real, successful, and invisible to the targets.
Predictably, someone took it as an invitation. A crypto CEO has publicly dared Anthropic to break into a Bitcoin wallet holding $6.3 million, BeInCrypto reports. Stunt or not, it's a sign of how fast "AI can find and exploit vulnerabilities" moved from research finding to public provocation.
Hardened infrastructure, and infrastructure that isn't
Palantir has pulled its AI stack out of the cloud entirely. Per TechRadar, the company debuted a containerized "war" data center — Nvidia B300 accelerators inside a shipping container — which is a direct answer to the problem of running frontier compute where there is no reliable connectivity and no reason to trust the network.
The contrast with the civilian side is stark. Tom's Hardware reports that water utilities in 45 US municipalities, mostly small towns, have been hit by cyberattacks suspected to have originated from Iran. Small utilities have the least security budget and the most physical consequence, which is precisely why they keep getting picked.
