Money, borders, and who builds what
Washington put $874 million of CHIPS Act funding behind AI-focused manufacturing, with GlobalFoundries taking the largest single award, according to Benzinga. It's the Trump administration's clearest statement yet about where it wants domestic capacity to land.
The map is being redrawn from the private side too. The framing is deliberately provocative and the timeline is nobody's idea of settled, but the figure signals how seriously capital is now taking a technology that spent a decade as a lab curiosity.
The through-line: AI demand has stopped being a data-center story. It's in your gadget prices, in Mexico's export mix, in Taiwan's GDP, and in the balance sheets of companies that make the unglamorous parts. The buildout is no longer something happening elsewhere.
