Nvidia rewrites the rules — and gets caught in a smuggling probe
Nvidia is no longer content to simply sell chips. According to reporting from The Information's Phoebe Liu, surfaced across Bing and Google News, the company is rolling out a revenue-sharing model that turns customers into partners: Nvidia uses its balance sheet to help cash-strapped AI startups afford its expensive hardware, then takes a cut of the business that follows. The Edge Singapore frames the aim as pulling smaller players deeper into Nvidia's orbit — a way to expand the ecosystem without waiting for buyers to get rich first.
The day's shadow story runs alongside it. Bloomberg reports that Taiwanese prosecutors have detained two Super Micro employees and a manager from Albatron, following a raid this week on Super Micro's local offices, as part of a probe into Nvidia chip smuggling. It's a reminder that as demand for Nvidia silicon soars, so does the pressure to move it through gray channels.
Big Tech wants its own silicon
Two of the biggest names in consumer hardware are going custom. Amazon's hardware chief Panos Panay told CNBC the company is designing its own AI chips to power the Echo speaker, Fire TV and future gadgets — bringing more of the intelligence in-house. Tesla, meanwhile, is staffing up its chipmaking push: Tom's Hardware reports it has poached Gary Jiang, a 17-year Intel manufacturing veteran, to help lead the effort. The message from both: owning the chip is becoming as strategic as owning the device.
Startups bet on specialization
The challenger field is drawing serious money. Etched, which is designing a chip built solely for the "transformer" architecture behind modern AI models, raised a hefty $800 million — a major vote of confidence in the idea that a chip built for one job can beat general-purpose hardware at it. Smaller but notable: OXMIQ, founded by ex-Intel star Raja Koduri, landed $35 million to build a combined AI processor design it plans to license to other companies, per Reuters' Max Cherney. Add Socionext's newly announced plans, flagged by Digitimes, and the picture is of an industry accelerating on new silicon, fresh startups and cooling breakthroughs all at once.
The foundry race converges on 2029
At the leading edge, the roadmaps are lining up on a single year. Samsung has restarted development of its 1.4-nanometer process, codenamed SF 1.4, per The Bell via MSN — a push to catch TSMC and Intel by 2029. Tech Times reports Samsung and TSMC are both now targeting that same 2029 horizon for their next generation of AI chips, setting up a head-to-head at the frontier of what's manufacturable.
Memory, and a China question
Apple is weighing a politically thorny supply move. Bloomberg reports it's in talks to buy memory chips from Chinese makers CXMT and YMTC — both on a Pentagon blacklist — for use in its devices. The talks underscore how hard it is to untangle global supply chains even under geopolitical strain.
The demand is real
If anyone doubts the boom's scale, look at South Korea. Government data reported by Nikkei Asia's Steven Borowiec shows the country just posted its biggest export month on record, blowing past $100 billion, with exports jumping on the strength of roaring AI chip demand. The appetite driving every story above isn't slowing — it's setting records.
