The talent wars heat up

The biggest story of the day is people, not products. Two of the most decorated names in artificial intelligence are leaving Google on the same news cycle. Noam Shazeer, a co-author of the seminal 2017 paper "Attention Is All You Need" that underpins today's large language models, is departing Google for OpenAI — a move CNBC's Jim Cramer called a "coup." Separately, Nobel-winning scientist John Jumper, a vice president at Google DeepMind and a key figure on the company's AI coding team, is leaving for Anthropic. Losing two researchers of this caliber in a single day is a striking signal of how fiercely the leading labs are now competing for the field's foundational minds.

Europe's robotics moment — and a contrarian bet

The other through-line today runs through Paris, where VivaTech 2026, one of Europe's largest technology gatherings, returned with three themes dominating the floor: AI, robotics and quantum computing. Robotics, in particular, is where Europe is trying to assert itself. Two French ventures embody the energy. The money and the infrastructure

The capital chasing all of this keeps growing. Nvidia is committing $10 billion to an AI infrastructure buildout, according to Insider Monkey — a move that deepens the chipmaker's role beyond supplying processors and, the report notes, draws it into an increasingly debt-fueled race to build out AI capacity.

China, meanwhile, is taking its ambitions literally off the ground. Beijing has announced a state-backed "Space Computing Industry Innovation Center," Tom's Hardware reports, an alliance aimed at building AI data centers in orbit.

Off to Mars, and a controversial scan

Space featured on the American side too: NASA has tapped Relativity Space — the rocket company led by former Google executive Eric Schmidt — to launch a 2028 mission to Mars carrying NASA's Aeolus payload, according to The Verge and Engadget.

Closing on a sharper note, Ars Technica reports the UK government plans to use facial recognition to estimate the ages of asylum seekers — and is pressing ahead even though officials are aware the technology can fail. It's a pointed reminder that as AI races into orbit, into robots and across the labs, its messiest tests are still playing out in everyday policy decisions on the ground.
